Cheng Yen (Traditional Hanzi: 证 严 法师, Hanyu Pinyin: Zhèngyán; born in Taichung County, Republic of China, May 11, 1937, age 72 years) was a nun in Taiwan. Cheng Yen is known for its Buddhist Tsu Chi Foundation established in 1966, a Buddhist humanitarian organization whose mission is to help victims of natural disasters in various parts of the world, preserving the environment and the world relewan.
Cheng Yen was born with the name of Wang Jinyun (王锦云) in 1937 in the village of Chingshui Village, Taichung County, Taiwan. His uncle had no children, so that Cheng Yen is given to be raised by an uncle and aunt. In early 1945, he had to have experience the pain and helplessness at the age of eight when he had to keep her brother who was ill in hospital for eight months. At age 23, his father died suddenly due to bleeding in the brain caused by stroke. When looking for a location for the funeral of his father, he first met with the Dharma Buddha.Cheng Yen himself also wrote a book titled "108 Words Reflection".
